Lake Rotomahana Boat Cruise
Waimangu Volcanic Valley & Rotomahana Boat Cruises
Lake Rotomahana at Waimangu Volcanic Valley covers approximately 15 coalescing craters formed by the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption. 15 years after that massive eruption the lake reached its current height and is now the deepest in New Zealand's North Island. Rotomahana is also the newest of all New Zealand’s larger, naturally formed, lakes. It is protected as a wildlife refuge, where large numbers of birds live here all year round.
Enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana with its own separate geothermal system and view thermal activity only seen from our vessel. The lake and surrounding land are protected from development, and will always remain as one of New Zealand’s beautiful, unspoilt, natural, wilderness areas. Patiti Island, in the middle of the Lake, is currently being restored by Waimangu Volcanic Valley Ltd, to a predator free state and will become a sanctuary for endangered New Zealand native birds.
